This will be the third consecutive year that the Following the opening of the new Collections Centre and the new historic vehicle workshop at the British Motor Museum, the Museum is delighted to announce the promotion of Martin Brown to Head Mechanic and the opportunity for a new skilled mechanic to join the workshop team.

Martin Brown, who joined the team in 2005 as an apprentice has worked his way up over the last 10 years to the position of Head Mechanic. He started at the Museum on a four year City & Guilds apprenticeship, attending college one day a week whilst learning the finer details of historic restoration and maintenance in the workshop at the British Motor Museum. In 2009 he became full time member of staff working alongside Steve Kite, Brian Norwood and workshop Team Leader Paul Gilder.

The Museum, always keen to support young people starting a career in vehicle maintenance, took on another apprentice, Austin Dickson, in 2015. He is completing a four year IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) apprenticeship at Warwickshire College.

Now, following the retirement of Steve Kite after over 25 years of service at the British Motor Museum, there is the opportunity for a skilled mechanic to join the team.

Paul Gilder, workshop Team Leader said “This is a rare opportunity for a skilled mechanic with a sound background in historic car restoration and vehicle maintenance to join our workshop team. We look after over 300 historic British cars dating back to the 1900’s, so it is a varied role with plenty of marques and models to work on.”

The British Motor Museum re-opened to the public in February following a £1.1 refurbishment resulting in a much more visually exciting and immersive display of cars, designed to appeal to both current fans as well as new audiences. The Collections Centre and new workshop also opened on the same date. Supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Jaguar Land Rover and the Garfield Weston Foundation, as well as the two charitable Trusts involved, the £4m building stores around 250 vehicles from the reserve collections of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Heritage Trust.

  3. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has won the attention of the Sunday Times for its social media work, which has placed the driving and riding charity’s Twitter channel as one of ten best motoring feeds to follow.

The IAM stands alongside the channels of DJ and TV star Chris Evans, motormouth TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson, American actor Jerry Seinfeld and newly appointed Top Gear presenter and journalist Chris Harris as the crème de la crème of motoring tweeters.

The prestigious national Sunday newspaper said: "The road safety charity offers practical advice and sticks up for the motorist — and its Twitter feed has the capacity to make you question your own bad habits behind the wheel."

The IAM’s Twitter page is updated several times a day, highlighting safer driving and riding initiatives from around the world, as well as advice on driving and riding in different situations, like in the dark or rain, on motorways or around roadworks.

It highlights the latest IAM and industry research, news about motoring rule changes, reminders of motoring laws and work carried out by IAM local groups from around the country. The IAM’s Twitter feed also enables like-minded people to connect with each other.

The IAM’s Twitter page has more than 11,000 followers and can be found at @iamgroup.

Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, said: “Social media is very important for the IAM. Drivers and riders appreciate bite-size pieces of information and are easily able to remember them and put them into practice as they use the road on a day-to-day basis.

“It is also a great way to interact with drivers, bikers, members and anyone passing by. We love to talk with anyone who has an interest in enjoyable and safer driving via social media – long may it continue.”

  4. Lincolnshire has ridden for the team.

“Gary was 2nd fastest in first practice last year, so with some luck and reliability, we are optimistic that he can bring the fast pace through to the race this year. With the Lightweight race now being 4 laps instead of 3, Gary will really be putting the bike through its paces, so we’ve made some changes and upgrades,” said Mike Hinkley, WK Bikes Managing Director and Team Principal. After the last couple of years being dogged by very bad luck, we’ve spent a lot of time developing the bike further since last year’s race and Gary and the team are looking forward to showing the potential of this bike.”

The WK Bikes team was born from a history of racing in the form of their sister company, Quadzilla. Although they are used to racing quads off road, the team bring the same passion, drive, experience and motivation to the WK Bikes team with their 650 bike on the world’s most challenging road race circuit.

The WK Bikes team have made technical developments and advanced its 650cc machine, which started as a commuter bike available from their own range of bikes, manufactured by the leading Chinese manufacturer CFMOTO. With the continued support from the CFMOTO factory and sister company Quadzilla, the team have been able to make further improvements to the standard machine.
