Save the date for the National Motorcycle Museum’s big party!

This year the National Motorcycle Museum is celebrating 30 years since first opening to the public by holding a series of events & launching some very exciting new initiatives. We hope that what we will be announcing throughout 2014 will excite & delight both motorcycle enthusiasts & non motorcyclists alike. Before we reveal all over the next few months we want to give everyone the chance to “save the date” when our celebratory year will cumulate around the time of the 30th anniversary weekend on Saturday 1st November 2014.

There will be an exclusive 30th birthday party on the evening of Friday 31st October with a 1980s theme to reflect the decade of our opening. As well as live music (watch this space for a big name rock band announcement) there will also be a great 80s rock disco to get the party started.

Not only that but there will be a “stars on stage” interview feature showcasing 3 of the biggest names from the last 3 decades of motorcycle racing (with their bikes fired up!). With full bar and catering facilities this will be a night at the Museum to remember. Museum Director James Hewing commented “many people don’t realize the size of the conference venue that adjoins the Museum with a largest rooms being bigger than some theatres. In this regard we can put on a huge celebration event in some of the most prestigious surroundings you can imagine”. Watch out for further details soon.   On Saturday 1st November we will also be inviting everyone to visit the Museum, free-of-charge, to celebrate our successes over the last thirty years. The focus will be on the fantastic range of machines within the collection as well as trade stands & displays from many of the Museum’s specialist suppliers & craftsmen. This great “open” day will also feature an autojumble, more celebrity interview features (with a live race bike fire up area) as well as special children’s activities. 

To start the celebrations-Probably the Best Raffle Prize in the World! To start our special celebrations the Museum will be giving enthusiasts the chance win the best motorcycle ever offered for raffle.

In the next few weeks tickets will be available to win  none other than a 1951 Vincent Series C Rapide. This original, matching numbers machine will be put through our workshops and will be all ready to go to its new owner following the draw which will take place on our anniversary of Saturday 01/11/14. The Hon Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, on Wednesday 16 April formally opened the new Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford Somerset, drawing over 500 guests from around the world to this top tourist attraction in the South West of England, with the furthest travelling from Australia for the special day.

Mayors, councillors, celebrities, leading business CEOs, Chairmen and MDs, car clubs, and enthusiasts alike, all attended the Grand Opening of the new Museum which, after ten years of planning, two and a half years of building work, and a privately funded £5 million investment, showcased its full collection of some of the greatest cars from around the world for the first time.

This included the official opening ofthree new exhibition halls – Minis and Micros, Century of Supercars, Motorcycle Mezzanine – three modernised halls, a new Haynes Motorland Children’s adventure play zone, new and modernised events facilities in the ‘Engine Rooms’, a brand new entrance foyer with a shop and Café 750, named after John H. Haynes OBE’s first book – ‘Building a 750 special’, and much more.

Guests were also able to take a ride outside the grounds in five of the Museum’s cars, which are part of the 400+ car and motorcycle collection, arguably the biggest global collection in the UK, and mostly in full working order.  For those preferring to stay on firm ground, they could explore the range of new, modernised and more interactive exhibits, taking a tour from the start of the journey – an 1885 Benz – through to Veteran, Vintage & Pre-War Classics, the famous red room of sports and GT cars, a trip through Memory Lane, or to the world’s largest collection of Speedway Motorbikes and memorabilia in the British Motorcycle Collection, to name a few.

Cutting the ribbon to the grand entrance, Ed Vaizey MP commented:  “I was delighted to be invited to open the new Haynes International Museum which I know has been a stunning success over the last thirty years and I have every confidence will be even more so over the next thirty years.  It has been impressive to see the journey from 30 to over 400 cars and motorcycles in the collection” and he joked “although if I can get my hands on the fantastic Mustang I have been eyeing up, that number may reduce by one.”

He added: “As well as bringing a much needed boost to the local Somerset economy and creating jobs, the new Museum will in the future continue to attract visitors and investment to the West Country at a key time for the South West following the recent flooding.”

John H. Subaru of America, Inc. announced today that Subaru will return to the fabled Isle of Man TT Races and attempt to beat its own fastest car lap time. The current record of 115.36mph for the iconic 37 3/4 mile TT Mountain Course was set three years ago by Mark Higgins in a (2011) Subaru WRX STI. Higgins will return to drive the new 2015 Subaru WRX STI.

The car Higgins will drive is a stock U.S.-spec 2015 WRX STI, with the exception of a roll-cage, race harness, fire suppression system and modified springs and dampers to handle the sustained high speeds of the course.

Subaru will also return as a partner with the Isle of Man, renewing its sponsorship of the race. “We are very excited to return for another attempt of the TT course and to be the official car of the TT,” said Dominick Infante, National Manager of Product Communications, Subaru of America, Inc. “The Isle of Man is paradise for anyone who appreciates motorsport and there is nothing like the TT road course anywhere else.”

In his previous attempt on the course, Higgins created one of the most memorable race videos when he had a self-described "moment” at the bottom of Bray Hill at 150 MPH. The video has received almost 10 million views via various media outlets.

After setting the record Higgins stated, “Setting the record was totally exhilarating and one of the highlights of my career. As a Manxman I love the TT Races and I have a huge amount of respect for the TT riders and what they do. It will be a real honour to attempt a new fastest car lap."

Subaru will complete 3 timed runs on Saturday 31st May, Monday 2nd June and Wednesday 4th June. The event has been the subject of comprehensive consultation with all relevant parties and will take place under full, closed road conditions.

David Cretney, the Isle of Man Government Political Member responsible for Tourism and Motorsport, commented:

"We are delighted to be able to help one of the TT’s valued, long term partners in delivering their promotional campaign for the new vehicle.
