Motorcycle Retail and Distribution Biggest Financial Winner in the UK
(August 27, 2010)The distribution and retail sector has been found to be the most significant in terms of the motorcycle industry's economic contribution to the UK. The sector has a turnover in excess of £3 billion and while the proportion of GVA is relatively low at around 21% of turnover, it still represents significant value added of £634 million. (1)
The sector includes wholesale and retail activities relating to the sale of motorcycles, components, clothing, accessories and remains the most significant sector of the UK motorcycle industry in terms of its economic contribution, employing more than 20,000 people in the UK.
The sector has seen the resurgence of Triumph, now a major UK automotive manufacturer adding to the large Japanese motorcycle manufacturers of Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki who have dominated the market for motorcycles in recent years.
The UK motorcycle market also provides imported goods from a large number of manufacturers across Europe including BMW, Piaggio, Aprilia, Ducati and Peugeot as well as many manufacturers of motorcycle clothing and accessories.
Imports of motorcycles and other related products from China and Taiwan are increasing, ensuring UK consumers have a wide choice of motorcycles and related products, across a broad price spectrum.
Steve Kenward, MCI's CEO commented, "The motorcycle retail and distribution sector is the most financially significant part of the UK industry, providing valuable employment, £634 million pounds of added value to the British economy as well as providing £391 million in tax contributions. British consumers are offered a wider than ever choice of motorcycle products offering greater than ever access to the world of motorcycling. There has never been a better time for people to enjoy the cost-effective benefits of two-wheels. The industry is now running a campaign to help get people who are interested in riding a bike or scooter to get started by participating in a free taster session with a local trainer, and taking their first steps into the world of bikes and scooters."
